Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday opened the first Mumbai Climate Week at the Jio World Convention Centre in Bandra. The event marks the beginning of a three-day international conference focused on climate action and practical solutions.
The conference is organised by Project Mumbai in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra and supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It will conclude on February 19, 2026. The event brings together experts from around the world, as well as national and local leaders, to discuss sustainable and workable climate solutions, especially for countries in the Global South.
The main goal of Mumbai Climate Week is to move beyond discussions and turn ideas into real action. The organisers aim to create solutions that can be implemented to reduce pollution and fight climate change.
At the launch event, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi announced that Maharashtra will receive one lakh additional solar pumps under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme. The scheme helps farmers use solar energy for irrigation, which reduces dependence on traditional electricity and lowers carbon emissions.
Mr. Joshi also said that India, now the world’s fourth-largest economy, has reduced its emissions over the past 10 years. He stated that the country is working to separate economic growth from rising emissions. This means India wants to grow economically without increasing pollution levels.
He described Mumbai Climate Week as the first event of its kind in the world and said Maharashtra is taking the lead in climate action. According to him, the State is becoming a model for how economic development and environmental protection can go together. He added that Mumbai should become a strong voice for global climate action.
The three-day gathering is expected to result in new partnerships, ideas, and steps that can help address climate challenges in a practical and meaningful way.
