FATF Warns of Financial Crime Risks in Gaming and Gambling

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has warned countries about the growing misuse of gaming and gambling platforms for financial crimes. According to the global financial crime watchdog, criminals are increasingly using these platforms to carry out activities such as money laundering, fraud and other illegal financial transactions.

Gaming and gambling platforms can allow users to move money quickly between accounts. In some cases, criminals may also take advantage of weak identity checks, limited monitoring and gaps in regulation. These features can make such platforms attractive to people who want to hide the source or destination of illegal funds.

The FATF has pointed out that the risk is not limited to traditional gambling websites. Online gaming platforms and related digital payment systems can also be misused when proper controls are not in place. Criminals may use complicated transactions to make illegal money appear to come from legitimate activities.

Another major concern is the international nature of these platforms. Online services can operate across different countries, while payments can move between several jurisdictions within a short period. This can make it difficult for authorities in one country to trace suspicious transactions or identify those responsible.

The FATF is therefore calling on governments and regulators to strengthen oversight of the gaming and gambling sectors. Authorities are being encouraged to improve customer identification systems, monitor unusual financial activity and ensure that companies follow rules designed to prevent money laundering and other financial crimes.

The organisation has also stressed the importance of cooperation between countries. Since criminals can move money across borders, law enforcement agencies and financial regulators need to share information and work together to identify suspicious activities.

The warning comes as digital platforms continue to grow rapidly around the world. While gaming and gambling services can be legitimate businesses, weak controls can create opportunities for criminals to exploit them.

The FATF has urged countries to act quickly and strengthen their systems before these risks become more serious. Better regulation, stronger monitoring and international cooperation will be important in protecting financial systems from being misused through online gaming and gambling platforms.
