Salman Khan’s journey from working as an Uber driver in Delhi-NCR to winning a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games is a story of determination, hard work and perseverance.
Salman and his partner Satnam Singh created history at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games by becoming the first Indian men’s double sculls pair to win a bronze medal at the Asian Games. The Indian duo finished third with a time of 6:13.25 seconds.
China won the gold medal after finishing in 6:09.37 seconds, while Uzbekistan took silver with a time of 6:10.49 seconds. India’s bronze added another medal to the country’s rowing campaign at the Games.
However, Salman’s journey to the Asian Games podium was far from easy.
After his father passed away in 2016, Salman had to take responsibility for supporting his family. He worked as an Uber driver in the Delhi-NCR region and drove a WagonR to earn a living.
A year later, Salman joined the Indian Army, fulfilling a dream his father had wanted for him. His life then took another important turn when he was introduced to rowing.
Coaches Satywan, Satish Siraat and Prabhat Mishra encouraged Salman to take up the sport. He began training at the Bombay Engineering Group, where he worked hard to develop his skills and physical strength.
The early days were challenging, but Salman continued to train and compete. His efforts eventually produced a major breakthrough when he won a gold medal at the 2022 National Games in Gujarat.
His performances continued to improve in 2023. He won several competitions and was later included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), giving him access to higher-level training and support.
Salman’s progress was also recognised by the Indian Army. His achievements helped him earn a promotion to the rank of Naib Subedar and eventually secure a place in India’s Asian Games rowing team.
The bronze medal in Aichi-Nagoya is therefore more than just another medal for Indian rowing. It represents the journey of an athlete who overcame personal and financial difficulties before reaching the international stage.
