From Bloemfontein to the Big Stage: Allan Donald’s Impact on Gerald Coetzee

Allan Donald, a legendary South African cricketer known as “White Lightning,” first spotted Gerald Coetzee when he was a schoolboy in Bloemfontein. Coetzee, who grew up in the same area as Donald, quickly showed promise as a fast bowler. By 2016, he had already been selected for the SA Colts and later captained the SA Schools team.

Donald took on Coetzee as a mentor during his early professional career, working closely with him from 2019 to 2022. Despite facing injuries, Coetzee showed determination and resilience, which impressed Donald. He described Coetzee as “a sponge” who asked thoughtful questions and was eager to learn.

In 2023, Coetzee made a comeback on the international stage during South Africa’s tour of New Zealand. With key players like Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen unavailable, Coetzee led the attack and took eight wickets in the series. His performance earned him praise and proved he was ready to return to the Proteas.

Coetzee has since joined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as an injury replacement for David Payne in the IPL 2026. This marks his fourth IPL team after stints with Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Titans. Donald believes this move is a smart decision by SRH, especially since Coetzee has made adjustments to stay fit and improve his bowling rhythm.

All in all, Coetzee’s journey from Bloemfontein to the international stage shows his talent, perseverance, and the valuable guidance of Allan Donald.
