Fruit Prices Rise in Chennai Markets

In Chennai, the prices of fruits like oranges and apples have increased a lot in recent weeks. Traders say this is mainly because of supply problems caused by tensions in West Asia, especially involving Iran.

At the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, fewer shipments of fruits are arriving than usual. Because of this, prices have gone up sharply. Oranges imported from countries like Iran and Egypt are now being sold at much higher rates.

Currently, a 15 kg box of these oranges costs between ₹1,400 and ₹1,700. During the same time last year, the price was much lower, around ₹900 to ₹1,000. These oranges are commonly used by juice shops, so the price increase is also affecting small businesses.

Traders say that if the supply situation does not improve soon, prices may continue to stay high or even rise further. This situation is also affecting customers, who now have to pay more for fruits in local markets.
