The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) collected fines amounting to ₹1.9 lakh from 241 people for breaking solid waste management rules at major beaches in the city. The action was taken between January 15 and 17 at popular beaches such as Marina and Besant Nagar.
According to a press release issued by the civic body, fines were imposed on both individuals and shop owners who were found throwing garbage in public places along the coastline. Many were caught dumping food waste, plastic items, and other trash on the beach and nearby areas.
GCC officials said the drive was carried out to keep the beaches clean, especially during the festive period when large crowds visit these locations. The corporation has warned that strict action will continue against those who violate waste disposal rules.
The civic body also appealed to the public and vendors to use designated bins and cooperate in maintaining cleanliness at Chennai’s beaches.
