GCC Pilots Playground Instructors for City Facilities

Chennai’s public playgrounds may soon become safer and better managed for early-morning walkers, young athletes, and senior citizens.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to hire trained playground instructors (PGIs) to supervise activities, maintain discipline, and ensure that facilities are used properly.

GCC has issued an e-tender to hire 12 qualified PGIs in the first phase. They will work on a one-year contract and manage playgrounds, gyms, swimming pools, and other public sports spaces across the city.

“Building new facilities is easy, but keeping them in good condition is a big task. GCC has 3,000 open space plots, 1,000 parks, and about 400 playgrounds. Maintaining the smaller ones and ensuring quality for the public is a challenge. This is just a pilot, and we will hire more instructors later,” said V. Sivakrishnamurthy, deputy commissioner, works, GCC.

According to the tender, the instructors will be paid on a daily-wage basis and must have a graduate degree in physical education.
