A gold-smuggling investigation in Kerala began after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) received information about a suspected attempt to bring gold into the country illegally.
Acting on the tip-off, DRI officers began monitoring passengers arriving at Calicut International Airport in Karipur. During the operation, officials reportedly stopped a family for further questioning and inspection.
According to officials, the investigation took an unusual turn when officers searched an eight-month-old baby travelling with the family. They reportedly found gold hidden inside the baby’s diaper. The method was allegedly used to make the gold difficult to detect during a normal airport check.
Officials said the operation led to the seizure of around 500 grams of gold, with an estimated value of approximately ₹50 lakh. The gold was allegedly being smuggled into the country without proper declaration or payment of the required customs duty.
The incident has drawn attention because smugglers are increasingly suspected of using unusual methods to hide valuable items while travelling through airports. Authorities regularly receive information about attempts to conceal gold in luggage, clothing, electronic devices, and other personal belongings.
The DRI is now investigating the case to determine who was behind the alleged smuggling attempt and where the gold came from. Officials are also expected to examine the family’s travel details and question those involved as part of the investigation.
Gold smuggling remains a major concern at Indian airports because of the high value of gold and the significant customs duties involved. Enforcement agencies regularly carry out checks and intelligence-based operations to prevent illegal gold from entering the country.
