Gurjant Singh Retires After Stellar Hockey Career

Gurjant Singh, a forward in the India men’s national field hockey team, has announced his retirement from international hockey. He shared this news during the Hockey India Awards held in New Delhi.

The 31-year-old striker ends a successful career that lasted nearly 10 years. During this time, he played 130 matches for India and scored 33 goals. He was known as an important player in India’s modern hockey success and played a key role in many big victories.

One of the biggest moments in his career came in 2016, when he helped India win the Junior World Cup in Lucknow. Gurjant scored in the final match, helping the team secure the gold medal. This victory brought him into the spotlight and marked the start of his international journey.

He made his senior debut in 2017 and soon became a regular player in India’s attack. His performance in major tournaments made him one of the key players in the team.

Gurjant’s greatest achievements came at the Olympic Games. He was part of the Indian team that won bronze medals at both the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Paris 2024 Olympics. These victories were very special, as they marked India’s strong comeback in international hockey.

Apart from the Olympics, he also helped India win gold medals at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and the 2017 Asia Cup. He was also part of the team that won several Asian Champions Trophy titles.

In 2021, Gurjant Singh received the Arjuna Award, one of India’s highest honours for athletes, in recognition of his excellent performance and contribution to hockey.

Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, praised Gurjant and said he has been an important part of India’s hockey journey for many years.

Bhola Nath Singh also appreciated him and said that Gurjant’s journey from the fields of Punjab to winning Olympic medals is truly inspiring for young players across the country.

Gurjant Singh retires as one of the key contributors to India’s hockey success, leaving behind a strong legacy for future generations.
