Haj Fare Hike Sparks Pilgrim Outrage

A recent decision by the Haj Committee of India, which operates under the Ministry of Minority Affairs, to increase Haj airfare by ₹10,000 has caused anger among many pilgrims.
The fare hike comes as global Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices have sharply increased due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. According to officials, the rise in fuel costs has significantly affected airline operating expenses.
A government circular explained that this one-time airfare revision was necessary because of the current crisis in the Middle East, which has disrupted fuel markets and raised transportation costs.
Since the conflict began on February 28, global ATF prices have reportedly more than doubled. Aviation fuel usually makes up around 30% to 40% of an airline’s total operating costs, so the sudden increase has placed financial pressure on airlines.
The higher airfare has triggered criticism from opposition parties, which are demanding that the government roll back the price increase to reduce the burden on pilgrims.
Many Haj travelers have also expressed disappointment, saying the additional cost creates financial hardship for families already planning for the expensive religious journey.
The issue has now become both a political and public concern, with growing calls for government intervention to support pilgrims during a difficult economic period.
