Healthcare as a New Driver for Domestic Tourism

India’s domestic travel landscape is expanding beyond traditional purposes such as pilgrimages, beach holidays, mountain trips, weddings and family visits, with healthcare increasingly becoming an important reason for travel.

According to data from the National Statistics Office (NSO), the Domestic Tourism & Expenditure Survey conducted between July 2025 and June 2026 recorded around 2,031 crore overnight visitor-trips for leisure, pilgrimage, healthcare and shopping during the year.

Of these, approximately 316 lakh trips were made for health and medical purposes, accounting for around 15.6% of the total trips recorded for these purposes.

The figures indicate that medical needs are becoming a significant factor in domestic mobility across India. People are increasingly travelling to other cities and states to access specialised treatment, better healthcare facilities and medical services.

This growing trend is adding a new dimension to India’s tourism sector, where healthcare is emerging alongside leisure, pilgrimage and other traditional reasons as an important driver of domestic travel.
