Heavy Rains Cause Deaths in Sri Lanka; Many Affected

Heavy rains and severe weather in Sri Lanka have caused major disruption across several parts of the country, leading to the deaths of two people, officials confirmed on May 15, 2026.

The victims were reported from Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka and Jaffna in the northern region. Continuous rainfall over the past five days has created dangerous conditions, including flooding, property damage, and growing safety concerns for thousands of residents.

According to disaster management authorities, the bad weather has affected eight out of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts. More than 4,000 people have been impacted by the heavy rains, with many families facing displacement due to flooding and unsafe living conditions.

At least 29 families, totaling over 100 people, have been forced to leave their homes and move into temporary shelters set up by authorities. These shelters are providing emergency accommodation, food, and basic necessities for those affected.

Officials also reported that around 88 houses have suffered partial damage due to strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding. Infrastructure in some areas has also been affected, causing transportation difficulties and increasing risks for local communities.

Weather experts have warned that the situation may worsen, with forecasts predicting up to 150 mm of additional rainfall in certain areas. The extreme weather is being caused by a low-pressure system located near Sri Lanka, which is generating intense storms and unstable weather patterns.

Although the low-pressure system is expected to gradually move away within the next two days, authorities remain on high alert as heavy rain could continue in the short term.

Landslide warnings have also been issued for several vulnerable districts, especially in hilly and mountainous regions where saturated soil increases the risk of sudden landslides.

Government agencies and disaster response teams are continuing rescue and relief operations while urging residents in high-risk areas to remain cautious, follow weather advisories, and move to safer locations if necessary.

The severe weather once again highlights Sri Lanka’s vulnerability to seasonal storms and natural disasters, with officials closely monitoring conditions as the country faces ongoing rainfall threats.
