At least 27 people have died due to heavy rainfall across Nepal since September 24. Four people are still missing, and eight were injured in landslides and floods caused by the monsoon rains.
The disasters affected 1,082 families and killed 114 livestock. Landslide incidents numbered 304, causing 20 deaths, four disappearances, and seven injuries. Flood-related incidents totaled 87, resulting in four deaths. Heavy rainfall also caused 151 incidents that led to three deaths and one injury.
The rains destroyed 227 homes and partially damaged another 142. Floods and landslides damaged 31 bridges. The heavy rain was linked to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.
On September 26, a massive landslide hit Nepal’s Manang district, sending debris into the Marsyangdi River. This blocked parts of the river briefly but caused no major damage. Landslides and avalanches have become frequent due to heavy monsoon rains.
An avalanche struck the base camp near the Himlung Himal peak on September 25, burying tents where support staff were staying. Twenty-two people are missing, all Nepalese citizens. Four bodies were recovered the next day.
Nepal is still recovering from August’s devastating flash floods near the Nepal-Tibet border. Those floods killed at least 1,453 and left over 5,000 missing. The Bhotekoshi River carried floodwaters downstream, destroying homes, vehicles, roads, bridges, and hydropower projects.
