The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to push back against President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada. The move is seen as a rare but mostly symbolic action against the White House’s policy. Some Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the measure, even though Republican leaders opposed it.
The vote took place on Wednesday, with 219 members voting in favor and 211 against. It is one of the first times the Republican-controlled House has challenged the President on one of his key policies.
The resolution aims to end the national emergency that President Trump declared in order to impose the tariffs on Canadian goods. Lawmakers who supported the measure argued that the tariffs could harm businesses and consumers.
However, even if the resolution passes in Congress, reversing the tariffs would require President Trump’s approval, which is considered unlikely.
The resolution will now move to the Senate for further consideration. The outcome there remains uncertain.
