“I love it”: Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer on His ‘Sarpanch’ Nickname

Punjab Kings have been unstoppable in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), and their skipper, Shreyas Iyer, has played a key role. After missing out on the title last season, Iyer is determined to lead his team to victory this time around.

Iyer, who is affectionately called ‘Sarpanch’ by Punjab Kings fans, has been in top form. In four matches, he has scored 203 runs with an impressive average of 67.67 and a strike rate of 187.96. He has hit 14 sixes and 14 fours this season.

During a conversation on JioStar’s ‘Believe’, Iyer shared how the ‘Sarpanch’ nickname made him feel. Initially, he was unsure about its meaning, but his teammates explained it means “the head of a family, group, or district.” This gave him clarity and motivation.

Currently, Punjab Kings are leading the IPL 2026 points table with nine points from five matches. Their only washout match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) resulted in both teams earning one point each. KKR remains at the bottom of the table with just one point after six matches.

Another standout player for Punjab Kings is uncapped Indian batter Prabhsimran Singh, who has scored 211 runs this season. Opening the batting, he averages over 70 and strikes at 172, hitting 22 fours and 11 sixes.

The Punjab Kings are currently unbeaten in IPL 2026, with Iyer’s leadership and strong performances from his team members driving their success.
