India and Kuwait have taken an important step to expand their defence relationship with the first meeting of the India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee held in New Delhi.
During the meeting, officials from both countries discussed several areas of defence cooperation. They agreed to work more closely in military training, joint exercises, medical services, defence planning, defence industries, and research and development.
First Joint Defence Committee Meeting
The meeting was jointly led by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary from the Indian side, and Brigadier General Raed Alsakran from Kuwait.
A number of senior officials and representatives from different Indian defence organisations took part in the discussions. The Indian delegation included representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of Defence Production, defence research organisations, military healthcare services, and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The participation of officials from different departments shows the wide range of areas in which India and Kuwait are looking to increase cooperation.
Focus on Training and Military Exercises
One of the important areas discussed was military training and joint exercises. Greater cooperation in these areas could help the armed forces of both countries learn from each other and improve their operational skills.
India and Kuwait are also expected to explore more opportunities for exchanges between their defence personnel. Such programmes can help build stronger professional relationships between the two countries’ armed forces.
Cooperation in Defence Industry and Research
The two sides also discussed cooperation in the defence industry and research sectors. This could create opportunities for India and Kuwait to work together on defence technology and other related projects.
India has been increasing its focus on defence production and research, while stronger international partnerships can provide opportunities for technology exchange and industrial cooperation.
Medical services and defence healthcare were also included in the discussions, highlighting the broad nature of the proposed partnership.
Implementing the 2024 Defence MoU
The meeting is particularly important because it is aimed at putting the objectives of the Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) into action.
India and Kuwait signed the defence cooperation MoU in December 2024. The agreement was reached during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kuwait.
The Joint Defence Committee provides a formal platform for both countries to review progress and identify new areas of cooperation under the agreement.
Strengthening India-Kuwait Relations
India and Kuwait have traditionally maintained close relations, including strong economic and people-to-people connections. Expanding defence cooperation adds another important area to their bilateral relationship.
The first Joint Defence Committee meeting is therefore seen as a significant step toward building a stronger and more structured defence partnership between the two countries.
Going forward, India and Kuwait are expected to continue discussions and develop practical programmes in training, military exercises, defence production, research, healthcare, and strategic planning.
