India and US Close to Trade Deal Agreement

India and the United States are continuing discussions to resolve differences over their proposed trade deal, with negotiations moving toward an agreement, according to India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. He emphasized that the foundational aspects of the两国的战略伙伴关系remain unchanged.

Jaishankar made these remarks during a forum, addressing questions about the status of talks between the two nations. When asked, he declined to share specific details but noted that Indian and U.S. officials were working to advance the agreement.

The discussions aim to address tariff issues, remove non-tariff barriers, and enhance market access for both countries. India is particularly focused on securing better terms for its goods in the U.S. market. Earlier this month, the U.S. Trade Representative indicated that while progress was being made toward finalizing the deal, an agreement wasn’t imminent.

Jaishankar highlighted that the U.S. is adopting a new approach to tariffs as part of efforts to re-industrialize and revise access to its economy. This shift is affecting trade negotiations with multiple countries, not just India.

He also noted that while other nations are engaged in similar talks with the U.S., India has made significant progress in its own negotiations. The minister clarified that India’s relationship with the U.S. is based on a strategic partnership rather than an official alliance.

Recent strains in bilateral ties include U.S. tariffs imposed on Indian goods, President Trump’s comments on his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, and changes to immigration policies affecting tech companies like Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro. These actions have added stress to the relationship.
