India Calls for Nuclear Disarmament at Conference

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the importance of maintaining global peace and security during India’s address at the 2026 High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament. He stressed the need to preserve strategic stability, prevent a new arms race, and work towards universal, non-discriminatory, and verifiable nuclear disarmament.

Delivering India’s statement virtually, Mr. Misri said that countries must act responsibly to reduce global tensions and avoid the spread of nuclear weapons. He underlined India’s long-standing position that disarmament efforts should be fair, transparent, and applicable to all nations without discrimination.

The Foreign Secretary also spoke about the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military sector. He said India is committed to the responsible use of military AI and has developed a national framework to evaluate trustworthy AI systems in the defence sector. According to him, this framework can help guide the creation of global rules and standards for the safe use of AI in defence.

Mr. Misri further highlighted India’s efforts to support the interests of the Global South. He referred to the upcoming AI Impact Summit 2026, which aims to explore how artificial intelligence can be used for development, social inclusion, and wider public access to technology. He said India believes that emerging technologies should benefit all countries, especially developing nations.

India’s statement at the conference reflected its broader approach of promoting global security, responsible innovation, and equitable development in an increasingly technology-driven world.
