A leading Chinese expert, Hu Shisheng, has noted that key differences between India and China remain unresolved ahead of talks in Beijing on August 25, 2026. The discussions will focus on building long-term stability along their disputed border while addressing ongoing tensions.
The meeting will be the 25th round of talks between Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Both leaders aim to prevent misunderstandings and improve communication to avoid conflict. Hu Shisheng, a South Asia expert at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, emphasized that while progress has been made in discussions about border management, no major agreements are expected soon.
He highlighted the importance of creating a stable environment for future leader-level interactions, especially with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to India for the BRICS Summit. Hu said maintaining peace along the border and achieving practical cooperation remain key priorities for both nations.
Despite efforts to normalize relations since their last major meeting in October 2024, fundamental differences between India and China persist. Both countries are working to manage these challenges while seeking opportunities for cooperation through platforms like BRICS and the Global South. Hu described this as a cautious approach rather than a full realignment of strategies.
