India LPG Production Rises 25 Percent

India’s domestic LPG production has increased by 25 percent after the government introduced several steps to boost supply for household consumers. The announcement was made during an interministerial briefing on recent developments in West Asia held in New Delhi on Wednesday evening.

Speaking at the briefing, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Sujata Sharma said that on March 8, 2026, the government issued an order to refineries and petrochemical complexes across the country. The order directed them to increase LPG production by diverting streams of propane, butane, propylene, and butenes into the LPG supply pool.

She explained that because of these steps, domestic LPG production has increased by about 25 percent. The government has also ensured that all domestically produced LPG is being directed mainly to household consumers, helping meet the demand for cooking gas across the country.

Crude Oil Supply Remains Secure

During the briefing, Ms. Sharma also spoke about India’s crude oil supply. She said that the country’s oil supply remains stable and secure despite tensions in West Asia. According to her, around 70 percent of India’s crude oil imports now come from regions outside the Strait of Hormuz, reducing dependence on that important but sensitive shipping route.

She added that the total volume of crude oil secured by the government is higher than what would normally arrive through the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that the country’s energy needs are met without disruption.

Oil and Gas Imports from Multiple Sources

India currently imports crude oil from around 40 countries, which helps diversify supply and improve energy security. Oil marketing companies have also secured several crude oil cargoes from different sources to maintain a steady supply.

Ms. Sharma further said that Indian gas companies have arranged LNG (liquefied natural gas) cargoes from new international suppliers. At present, two LNG cargoes are already on their way to India, which will help strengthen the country’s gas supply in the coming weeks.

Officials said these steps are part of the government’s strategy to ensure stable energy supplies, increase domestic production, and reduce risks caused by geopolitical tensions in global energy markets.
