India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday (January 26, 2026) with a grand and colourful ceremony in New Delhi. The event showcased the country’s military strength, cultural heritage, and achievements.

The main celebrations were held at Kartavya Path, the central boulevard of the national capital. The parade featured an impressive display of India’s defence power. Missiles, warplanes, newly-raised military units, and modern weapon systems were presented during the march past. Some of the equipment shown had been used during Operation Sindoor, highlighting the preparedness and capability of the armed forces.

The celebrations were attended by many important leaders and dignitaries. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, were the chief guests for the event. Their presence added international importance to the occasion.

This year’s Republic Day theme focused on 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. The parade and cultural programmes paid tribute to the song’s historic role in India’s freedom movement and celebrated the spirit of patriotism and unity.

Republic Day marks the day when the Indian Constitution came into effect in 1950, making India a democratic republic. The day is celebrated every year with parades, performances, and patriotic events across the country.
