India Pushes for Diplomacy Over Military Solutions at G20 Meeting

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has stressed the importance of using diplomacy instead of military action to solve international conflicts. Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, the United States, he said countries should work together to maintain peace and stability around the world.

During his speech, Jaishankar highlighted the need to respect international law and protect freedom of navigation in international waters. He called for an immediate end to attacks on civilian ships and seafarers, particularly in areas affected by ongoing conflicts. He also expressed concern about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and rising tensions in West Asia.

The minister pointed out that developing countries, especially those in the Global South, are facing serious economic difficulties because of these conflicts. Rising prices of essential goods such as fuel, food and fertilisers are creating additional pressure on ordinary people and businesses. He said these countries are suffering even though they are not directly involved in the conflicts.

Jaishankar also highlighted the impact of the West Asia conflict on Indian citizens. According to the details shared, at least 22 Indians, including 14 seafarers, have lost their lives since the conflict began earlier this year. He stressed the importance of protecting the safety of people working on ships and ensuring that civilian vessels can travel safely.

Before the G20 meeting, Jaishankar held discussions with foreign ministers from several countries to strengthen international cooperation. He is also scheduled to take part in a QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting alongside representatives from Japan, Australia and the United States. The discussions are expected to focus on regional security, cooperation and important international issues.

The United States will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami later this month, bringing together leaders from major economies to discuss global challenges and possible solutions.

Following his visit to Atlanta, Jaishankar will travel to St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda. He will lead India’s delegation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting next week. The meeting will provide an opportunity for Commonwealth member countries to discuss international cooperation, economic development and shared challenges.

Through these meetings, India is expected to continue supporting diplomatic discussions, international cooperation and peaceful solutions to global conflicts.
