India Seizes Three Sanctioned Iran-Linked Tankers

India has seized three oil tankers linked to Iran that are under U.S. sanctions this month, according to a source on Monday, February 16, 2026.

The source said India has also increased surveillance in its maritime zone to stop illegal trade activities. The move is aimed at preventing Indian waters from being used for ship-to-ship transfers that hide the true origin of oil cargo.

Ship-to-ship transfers are often used to move oil between vessels at sea to avoid detection and bypass sanctions. By doing this, the origin of the oil can be concealed.

A source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that India wants to ensure its waters are not misused for such activities. The government is closely monitoring maritime operations to prevent any violations.

The action shows India’s effort to enforce international rules and prevent illegal oil trade within its territorial waters.
