A 19-member Indian forensic team has begun working with Nepalese experts to help identify victims of the recent flash floods in Nepal. The team is examining DNA samples taken from bodies and remains recovered from areas affected by the disaster.
The joint effort is aimed at speeding up the identification process and helping families learn what happened to their missing relatives. The floods caused widespread destruction and left a large number of people dead or unaccounted for.
The Indian team is working alongside Nepalese forensic experts at two major laboratories in the Kathmandu Valley. These are the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory and the National Forensic Science Laboratory.
DNA Testing to Identify Victims
DNA testing has become an important part of the rescue and identification operation because many of the recovered bodies are badly damaged or consist only of partial remains.
According to Nepal Police, 1,068 bodies have been recovered so far. In many cases, identifying the victims through normal methods has been difficult because of the condition of the remains.
