Indian badminton players Tanvi Sharma, Unnati Hooda, and Kidambi Srikanth
reached the semifinals of the Syed Modi International Tournament in Lucknow
yesterday.
In women’s singles, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma defeated Sin Yan Happy Lo from Hong
Kong 21-13, 21-19. She will now play against Japan’s Hina Akechi, the fifth seed,
who surprised third seed Sung Shuo Yun by winning 21-8, 21-15.
Unnati Hooda also reached the semifinals after beating fellow Indian Rakshitha
Ramraj. The match went to three games, and Unnati won 21-15, 13-21, 21-16. She
will next face fourth seed Neslihan Arin of Turkey, who defeated India’s Isharani
Baruah 21-19, 13-21, 21-15.
In men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth moved forward after his opponent Priyanshu
Rajawat retired from the match. The score was 21-14, 11-4 in Srikanth’s favour
when Rajawat stopped playing.
Another Indian, Mithun Manjunath, beat Manraj Singh 21-18, 21-13. Mithun will now
face Srikanth in an all-Indian semifinal.
In women’s doubles, top seeds Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly won comfortably
against fifth seeds Bengisu Ercetin and Nazlican Inci, finishing 21-15, 21-16.
Treesa Jolly also entered the semifinals in mixed doubles. She and her partner
Hariharan Amsakarunan defeated Andika Ramadiansyah and Nozomi Shimizu of
Australia 21-18, 21-14.
