IPL 2026: PBKS’ Shashank Singh Credits Ponting and Iyer for Player Freedom

Shashank Singh, a key player for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has grown significantly as a cricketer during his two seasons with the team. In both 2024 and 2025, he scored over 350 runs each season and maintained a strike rate above 150. He now fully understands his team’s dynamics and expectations.

In IPL 2025, Punjab Kings reached the final but lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six runs. The team featured several uncapped players, including Shashank Singh, Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Musheer Khan, Nehal Wadhera, Vijaykumar Vyshak, and Suryansh Shedge. Five of these players played in the final against RCB.

Shashank has praised head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer for boosting his confidence and giving him freedom to play fearlessly ahead of IPL 2026. He highlighted how Ponting and Iyer focus on positive reinforcement, even during losses. For example, after a poor performance against RCB in the qualifier, the team stayed positive and focused on improvement rather than dwelling on failure.

Shashank also noted the strong performances of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh during India A’s unofficial ODI series against Australia A, where they played key roles in their team’s success. He believes their fearless approach is a result of Ponting and Iyer’s leadership.

As IPL 2026 approaches, Punjab Kings are focused on improvement rather than dwelling on past achievements or failures. Their next match will be against Gujarat Titans on March 31, 2024, as they aim to build on their previous season’s progress and challenge for the title.
