Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Beijing on September 16, 2026, for talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The visit comes shortly after the two officials met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry announced Araghchi’s visit, highlighting the close diplomatic relationship between Iran and China. Araghchi has visited China four times since 2024, reflecting the growing importance of relations between the two countries.
During the BRICS summit, Araghchi held discussions with Wang Yi as well as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He attended the summit alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The latest visit to Beijing is expected to provide another opportunity for the countries to discuss regional and international developments.
The talks come at a time of rising tensions in West Asia. The situation in Yemen and the Red Sea has created concerns about regional security and international shipping. The Houthis, an Iran-aligned Yemeni group, have carried out attacks in the region and have been involved in tensions around important shipping routes.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden, is an important route for global trade. Any disruption in the area can affect commercial shipping and international supply chains.
At the same time, tensions involving Iran and the United States have affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, another major route for global energy supplies. Restrictions and disruptions in these key waterways have raised concerns about energy supplies and shipping costs.
China has called for restraint as regional tensions continue. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed concern about the conflicts involving Yemen and the Red Sea and urged the parties involved to avoid further violence.
Guo also called for disputes to be addressed through dialogue and diplomatic efforts. He stressed the need for all sides to exercise restraint and work toward reducing tensions as quickly as possible.
Araghchi’s Beijing visit is therefore taking place against a backdrop of serious regional security and shipping concerns. The discussions with Wang Yi could focus on the situation in West Asia, diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, and broader cooperation between Iran and China.
