The Islamic State (IS) militant group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan, which killed at least 31 people and injured around 170 others during Friday prayers.

The blast took place when many worshippers had gathered at the mosque for prayers, causing heavy casualties and panic among the crowd. Emergency services rushed to the spot, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In a statement shared on its Telegram channel, the Islamic State said it carried out the attack. The group also released an image of the suspected attacker. The man, whose face was covered and who was holding a gun, was identified as Saifullah Ansari.

The militant group claimed that the bombing was part of its ongoing campaign against those it calls its ideological enemies.

Security forces have increased checks and tightened safety measures in the capital following the attack. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.

The attack has been widely condemned, with many calling it a tragic act of violence against innocent civilians.
