Japan will send its twin panda cubs back to China today, leaving the country without any pandas for the first time since 1972. The pandas had been a big attraction for many years and were loved by visitors, especially children.
The return of the pandas comes at a time when relations between Japan and China are tense. Ties between the two countries have worsened after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan would take military action if China attacked Taiwan. This statement has added strain to diplomatic relations.
Because the pandas are leaving, many people rushed to Ueno Zoo in Tokyo over the weekend to see them one last time. Thousands of visitors stood in long queues, with some waiting for more than three and a half hours just to catch a final glimpse.
For many families, it was an emotional farewell. The zoo staff also thanked the public for their love and support for the pandas over the years. With their departure, Japan will not have any giant pandas for now, marking the end of an era for panda fans in the country.
