Japan Repeals Ban on Lethal Weapon Exports

Japan has ended its ban on exporting lethal weapons, marking a significant shift in its post-World War II pacifist policy. The move aims to strengthen the country’s defense industry amid concerns over aggressive actions by China and North Korea. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Cabinet approved new guidelines that remove most restrictions on arms exports, including advanced warships, combat drones, and other weapons systems.

Government officials stated that the change will enhance Japan’s security while promoting stability in the region and globally. They emphasized the need to adapt to rapidly evolving regional security dynamics. The policy has been welcomed by key defense partners like Australia, as well as by Southeast Asian and European nations. However, China has criticized the decision, viewing it as a potential escalation in military tensions.

Japan previously restricted arms exports under its pacifist constitution, allowing only limited sales for rescue, transport, surveillance, and other non-lethal purposes. The recent policy shift reflects growing concerns about regional security and Japan’s increasing role in global defense partnerships.
