Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has clarified his position on social reformer E.V. Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, after his tribute to the leader on his 147th birth anniversary drew criticism from some of his supporters. Annamalai said he recognises some of Periyar’s social reform work but does not agree with his atheistic and anti-Brahmin views.
On September 17, Annamalai posted a tribute to Periyar, describing him as an important figure in Tamil Nadu’s social and political history. He also referred to Periyar’s work against social inequalities and superstitions. The post led to criticism from sections of his supporters, who questioned his decision to praise the Dravidian leader.
Annamalai later explained his position during a programme in Madurai. He said he accepts Periyar’s contribution to women’s liberation and his advocacy for the eradication of caste discrimination. At the same time, he said he “completely rejects” Periyar’s atheistic views and anti-Brahmin stance.
The clarification was aimed at separating Periyar’s social reform activities from the parts of his ideology that Annamalai disagrees with. Annamalai has previously criticised aspects of Periyarist politics, particularly the display of atheistic messages near Hindu temples.
Annamalai also reiterated his position on statues carrying atheistic inscriptions outside Hindu temples. He said that if his political movement comes to power, such statues would be moved to other public locations rather than destroyed. He argued that devotees visiting temples should not be confronted with explicitly atheistic messages at temple entrances.
Periyar remains a major and contested figure in Tamil Nadu’s social and political history. He is widely associated with the Self-Respect Movement, opposition to caste discrimination, rationalism and criticism of religious and social hierarchies. His views on religion and Brahminical social structures have also remained subjects of political debate.
The controversy surrounding Annamalai’s tribute shows the continuing debate over Periyar’s legacy in Tamil Nadu. While some political groups highlight his contribution to social reform and equality, others strongly disagree with his views on religion and caste.
Annamalai’s latest remarks therefore present a distinction in his position: he says he can acknowledge Periyar’s work on women’s rights and caste discrimination while rejecting the reformer’s atheistic and anti-Brahmin positions. His comments have added another dimension to the continuing political discussion over Periyar’s legacy in Tamil Nadu.
