Karnataka Notifies Welfare Fee for Gig Workers

The Karnataka government has announced the welfare fee that aggregator platforms must pay on the earnings of gig workers. This step is part of the Karnataka Platform Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Act, 2025.

Under the new rule, aggregator platforms such as ride-hailing and food delivery companies must pay a welfare fee based on the final amount paid to gig workers for each transaction. The fee will be calculated on the worker’s payout after every completed service.

The government said the money collected through this welfare fee will be used to provide social security benefits to gig and platform workers. These benefits may include health support, insurance, and other welfare schemes.

To ensure transparency, the state has directed that all payments made to gig workers must be linked to a Payment and Welfare Fee Verification System. This system will track payouts and make sure that the correct welfare fee is collected.

The move aims to improve financial security and social protection for gig workers, who often do not have regular employment benefits. The government said the new system will help create a more structured and supportive framework for platform-based workers in the State.
