The Kerala government has decided to add 28 communities to the state’s Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) list. This move will help students from these communities get reservation benefits and other educational support in colleges and higher education institutions.
The government accepted the recommendation made by the State Backward Classes Commission, which studied the social and educational conditions of these communities before making its suggestion.
Although these 28 communities were already included in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list, they were not part of the SEBC category. Being included in the SEBC list is important because it allows students to receive special benefits such as reserved seats in higher education institutions, scholarships, fee concessions, and other support schemes.
Officials said the change will improve educational opportunities for students from these groups and help them compete better in academics and professional courses. The move is expected to support families who face social and economic challenges.
With this decision, the government aims to promote equal opportunities and ensure that more students from backward communities can continue their education and build better careers.
