Kerala Approves 583-km Rapid Rail Corridor

The Kerala Cabinet has given in-principle approval for a major transport project — a 583-kilometre-long Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor. The proposed rail line will connect Thiruvananthapuram in the south to Kasaragod in the north, covering almost the entire length of the State.

The decision comes ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections and is seen as an important step to improve fast and modern travel in Kerala.

The government plans to inform the Central government about Kerala’s interest in the project. Officials say this move brings back the State’s dream of having a high-speed rail system, but in a new and more practical form.

If completed, the RRTS corridor will allow trains to run at high speeds and help people travel quickly between major cities and towns. It is expected to reduce travel time, cut road traffic, and make daily commuting easier for thousands of passengers.

The State transport department has been given the responsibility to start discussions and consultations regarding the project. Once the Centre gives its initial approval, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed to move the project forward.

Experts say the new rail system could boost economic growth, improve connectivity, and provide safer and more comfortable transport for the public.

More details about the cost, route, and timeline are expected to be announced after further talks with the Central government.
