Kerala Christians Report Triggers Political Controversy

The Kerala government has triggered a political controversy by saying it has already acted on hundreds of recommendations from the Justice (Retd) J.B. Koshy Commission report, even though the report has not been made public. Church organisations and opposition parties have questioned this claim, saying it does not make sense to act on recommendations that people have not even seen. They also allege that the government’s sudden urgency is politically driven, as the 2026 Assembly elections are drawing closer.

The issue has gained attention at a time when Kerala is preparing for crucial elections. A report that was meant to study the educational, economic, and social conditions of Christians in the state has now become a major talking point. Critics say the timing of the government’s statements has raised doubts about its intentions.

Although Christians in Kerala are generally viewed as socially and educationally advanced, there are significant inequalities within the community. Many sections still face economic and social challenges. To address this, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan appointed the Justice (Retd) J.B. Koshy Commission in 2020. The commission was asked to study the backwardness and welfare needs of Christians and to suggest clear and practical steps for improvement.

The commission submitted its report to the state government in May 2023. However, for more than two years after receiving it, the government did not release the report or take visible action on its findings. This long delay has now added to the controversy, with demands growing from church bodies and political parties for the report to be made public and for the government to explain its actions clearly.
