The new system will use AI technology along with advanced weather forecasting tools to provide faster and more accurate predictions. By analysing weather data in real time, the system can help authorities identify areas that may be at risk and issue early warnings to people living in those locations.
A major part of the programme is the creation of detailed flood maps. These maps will identify flood-prone areas, rivers, low-lying regions, and locations that are more vulnerable during heavy rains. Officials say this information will help emergency teams plan rescue operations, evacuate people safely, and reduce the impact of floods.
The government also plans to strengthen disaster preparedness by improving the maintenance of water bodies across the state. As part of the initiative, dams will be cleaned and inspected regularly to ensure they function properly during periods of heavy rainfall. Authorities will also monitor water levels more closely to reduce the risk of flooding.
Another important step is conducting river audits across Kerala. These audits will examine the condition of rivers, identify blockages, study water flow, and recommend measures to improve drainage. The programme also includes strict action against illegal land encroachments along rivers, canals, wetlands, and other water bodies. The government says unauthorized construction and encroachment can block the natural flow of water, increasing the risk of floods. Removing such encroachments is expected to improve water movement and reduce flooding in vulnerable areas.
Along with technology and infrastructure improvements, the government plans to strengthen coordination between disaster management agencies, local authorities, emergency services, and weather departments. Better communication and information sharing are expected to improve the speed and efficiency of rescue and relief operations.
The AI-based system is also expected to support emergency planning by helping authorities decide where to deploy rescue teams, relief materials, and medical assistance before a disaster strikes. Early warnings can give residents more time to move to safer locations and protect their belongings.
