Kerala’s long coastline, stretching 590 kilometers across nine districts, has faced constant challenges from the sea. Over the years, coastal erosion has gradually destroyed land, affected people’s livelihoods, and made finding easy solutions difficult.
With no lasting fix in sight, the state is now trying a more focused and costly approach to protect its coastline. The government plans to spend Rs 4,000 crore on this effort, aiming to address the growing threats posed by sea level rise and strong waves. This new strategy includes building structures like breakwaters and artificial reefs to reduce erosion and shield coastal areas from damage.
However, experts warn that these measures might not fully stop the coastline from changing. They stress the need for long-term planning and adapting to the ongoing battle against nature. For Kerala, this fight is not just about protecting land but also ensuring the survival of communities and ecosystems along its beautiful yet vulnerable coastlines.
