Every day, thousands of vehicles travel on the Vandalur–Kelambakkam Road, making it one of the busiest roads on the southern edge of the city. The road is very important as it passes by many engineering and medical colleges, schools, a police academy and offices of the forest department. It also serves as a key link between Vandalur Zoo and Kelambakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road, popularly known as Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
Because of the heavy traffic, this road is often crowded during peak hours, especially in the mornings and evenings. Many students, office-goers and residents depend on this stretch for their daily travel. In recent months, traffic flow has improved at some junctions after authorities installed speed breakers and introduced basic traffic management steps such as better lane markings and signboards.
However, commuters say that the Kolapakkam junction continues to be a major trouble spot. Long traffic jams are common here, and vehicles often move very slowly. Drivers complain that poor road design, frequent crossings and the mixing of heavy vehicles with local traffic make the problem worse. Many road users are urging the authorities to take stronger steps to ease congestion at Kolapakkam and ensure smoother and safer travel along this busy road.
