Kottayam Politics Heats Up Ahead of Elections

From the time of leaders like P. T. Chacko to Oommen Chandy, Kottayam district in central Kerala has been one of the most important political regions in the state. It is known as the strong base of the Kerala Congress, which was started in 1964. The party has strong support mainly from Syrian Christian and Nair communities in central Kerala.

Areas like Pala and nearby regions are especially important for different groups (factions) of the Kerala Congress. These include factions led by leaders like K. M. Mani and P. J. Joseph. Because of this, politics in Kottayam is complex and highly competitive, with different groups trying to gain influence.

Kottayam district has nine Assembly constituencies, and each one has its own political style and local issues. These are Vaikom (reserved for Scheduled Castes), Ettumanoor, Kottayam, Puthuppally, Changanassery, Pala, Kaduthuruthy, Kanjirappally, and Poonjar. Even though the district is not very large, each constituency has different social backgrounds, strong local leaders, and unique political histories.

With the Assembly elections coming closer, political activities in these areas are increasing. Leaders are visiting people, parties are planning their campaigns, and voters are discussing important issues. News platform South First visited some of the key constituencies in Kottayam to understand what people are thinking and what issues matter most to them.

Overall, Kottayam remains a politically active district where elections are closely watched, and the results often reflect the changing mood of the people.
