Canada’s Leylah Fernandez won the Singapore Tennis Open on Sunday, defeating Australia’s Talia Gibson in a strong comeback performance to claim her sixth WTA Tour title.
Fernandez won the match 7-5, 6-0 after taking control late in the opening set. She won the final eight games of the match, turning a closely fought contest into a one-sided finish in the second set.
The victory was Fernandez’s first title of the 2026 season and her second WTA 500-level championship. She previously won a WTA 500 title in Washington last year.
The final lasted one hour and 38 minutes, with both players competing strongly during the early stages. Gibson pushed Fernandez during the first set, but the Canadian found another level at the crucial stage and closed out the opening set 7-5.
Fernandez then carried that momentum into the second set. Gibson struggled to find answers as Fernandez controlled the rallies and continued to put pressure on her opponent. Fernandez won all six games in the set to complete a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Fernandez entered the tournament as a wild card and was ranked No. 31 in the world. Her title-winning run is expected to lift her five places in the live rankings, moving her to around No. 26.
The Singapore victory adds another important achievement to Fernandez’s career. The 24-year-old Canadian has established herself as a consistent competitor on the WTA Tour and continues to build her record at major events.
Her latest title also highlights her ability to recover during difficult matches and maintain her focus when opportunities arise. After a competitive opening set against Gibson, Fernandez produced a dominant finish to secure the championship.
With her first title of 2026 now secured, Fernandez will look to carry the confidence from Singapore into the rest of the season as she continues her push up the world rankings.
