Lionel Messi is set to expand his involvement in football ownership by moving closer to buying Spanish second-division club CD Eldense. The World Cup-winning Argentina star has reached an agreement to purchase the entire club, according to an announcement made by Eldense on Wednesday.
Messi has reportedly agreed to buy 100% of the shares in CD Eldense from Colombian investment company TH Soluciones Group S.A.S., the club’s current owner. If completed, the deal would give Messi full ownership of the Spanish club.
However, the takeover is not complete yet. The agreement still needs to go through several legal and contractual procedures. These include due diligence and approval from Spain’s High Council for Sports. The final completion date has not yet been confirmed.
Spanish media reports suggest that the deal could be completed soon if all the remaining requirements are successfully met. Once the process is finished, Messi would add another Spanish club to his growing football investment portfolio.
CD Eldense currently compete in Spain’s Segunda Division, the country’s second level of professional football. The club are currently 20th in the league standings and are fighting to improve their position.
The club was taken over by TH Soluciones Group in October last year. Under the new ownership, Eldense have continued their efforts to establish themselves at a higher level of Spanish football after spending many years competing in regional divisions.
