Lok Sabha Votes on Women’s Quota Law

The Lok Sabha will vote at 4 p.m. on Friday (April 17, 2026) on three bills aimed at amending the women’s quota law and creating a delimitation commission. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has announced the voting schedule.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured members of the Lok Sabha that southern states will not lose their representation if the women’s reservation law is implemented after the upcoming delimitation. He shared that the number of seats allocated to the five southern states in the Lok Sabha will increase from 129 to 195, with their share rising slightly from 23.76% to 23.87%. Shah plans to officially respond to the debate on the three bills later today.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Reservation Act of 2023, which reserves 33% of seats in legislatures for women, came into effect on Thursday (April 16, 2026). However, it remains unclear why this act was implemented during ongoing parliamentary debates about amending and enforcing it by 2029.
