M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s Critique on Power Dynamics Embarrasses CPI(M) in Kerala

Renowned Jnanpith laureate M.T. Vasudevan Nair, known as MT, has left Kerala’s ruling CPI(M) in an uncomfortable position after delivering a keynote address at the Kerala Literature Festival. In his statements, MT discussed how power can influence outcomes and raised a warning about the emergence of a Stalinist cult.

The 90-year-old writer’s comments, made in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, sparked speculation about a comparison between Vijayan and legendary Communist EMS Namboodiripad. While CPI(M) leaders tried to downplay the remarks, MT’s fellow traveler, N.E. Sudheer, emphasized that MT intended to share facts for introspection. The episode has heightened tensions within the party, already facing criticism for Vijayan’s leadership style.
