Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a petition filed by actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay. He had challenged a penalty of ₹1.5 crore imposed by the Income Tax Department.
The penalty was issued after the department claimed that Vijay did not fully disclose his actual income during the 2015–16 assessment year. Based on this, officials sent him a demand notice asking him to pay the amount.
Vijay approached the court, questioning the penalty and requesting that the demand notice be cancelled. However, the court did not accept his plea.
Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorty rejected the petition and upheld the Income Tax Department’s action. With this order, the penalty imposed on the actor remains valid.
The case highlights the importance of proper income disclosure and tax compliance, even for public figures.
