At least 27 people were killed and more than 25 others injured in two separate mass shootings in South Africa, police said on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The attacks took place near Johannesburg and Cape Town, two of the country’s largest cities.
The first shooting happened late Saturday night at a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg. According to police, eight armed suspects entered the area and opened fire using AK-47 rifles and pistols.
The attack left 17 people dead and at least 15 others injured. Emergency services took the injured victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police launched an investigation and began searching for the suspects following the shooting.
The second attack took place early Sunday morning in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Gunmen opened fire at a store, killing 10 people and injuring another 11, according to police reports.
Authorities were searching for those responsible for the second shooting. Police had not provided further details about the number of suspects involved or what may have led to the attack.
The two incidents came only days after another deadly shooting near Durban. In that attack, three gunmen reportedly opened fire at a house party, killing 11 people. Among those killed was a pregnant woman.
The latest incidents have renewed concerns about gun violence and organised crime in South Africa. The country has long struggled with high levels of violent crime, including armed robberies, gang-related violence and shootings.
However, the number of people killed in several mass shootings within a short period has raised fresh concern among authorities and communities. The attacks have also increased pressure on law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible and prevent further violence.
As of Sunday, police had not announced any arrests in connection with the two latest shootings. Investigations were continuing, with authorities expected to gather evidence, identify suspects and determine the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
The shootings have left families and local communities mourning while authorities continue efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
