Melbourne [Australia], August 17 (ANI): Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has backed spinner Nathan Lyon after a tough performance in the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin. He noted that the opposition was patient and disciplined, especially against Lyon when the pitch wasn’t aiding spinners.
Lyon, who has taken 568 wickets at an impressive average of 30.32, struggled to make an impact during Australia’s recent loss to Bangladesh in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 series. He ended with figures of 1/125, while Bangladesh’s off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed five wickets later in the match.
Lyon, known for controlling the run rate and putting pressure on opponents at home, faced difficulties in his usual role during this Test. McDonald expressed sympathy for Lyon and highlighted how well Bangladesh handled him, especially when the conditions favored batting.
“I think they played him exceptionally well,” McDonald said. “Their batting unit was very patient and disciplined, even against our quick bowlers. When we gave width, they took advantage of it.”
McDonald also pointed out that the pitch offered little assistance for Lyon, making it hard to judge his performance in one Test.
Despite calls for changes to the team, including dropping underperforming players Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne, McDonald cautioned against hasty decisions. He acknowledged the aging squad but emphasized that the players still have plenty of cricket left in them.
Reflecting on the loss, McDonald noted how challenging it is for the players and urged everyone to keep perspective.
“There will always be a call for change after a loss,” he said. “Our players feel it deeply, as they do when they play for Australia.”
Looking ahead, McDonald stressed the importance of moving forward and preparing for the next game, rather than focusing on immediate changes.
The second Test between Australia and Bangladesh is scheduled to start on August 22 at Mackay.
