Messi Stars as Inter Miami Wins First Game at New Stadium

Lionel Messi scored once and set up another goal as Inter Miami earned its first win at Nu Stadium, defeating Portland 2-0 on Sunday.

The match marked Inter Miami’s first victory in their new 26,000-seat stadium after three draws and a loss. German Berterame also found the net for Inter Miami.

Messi opened the scoring in the 31st minute with his 13th goal of the season. He received a pass from Telasco Segovia inside the box and beat Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis from close range.

Inter Miami doubled its lead in the 42nd minute when Messi dribbled past two defenders and sent a cross to Berterame, who converted from the left post.

Portland’s best chance came early when Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair saved Cole Bassett’s shot from outside the box in the 11th minute.

The match saw a unique atmosphere as Inter Miami’s fan group “La Familia” remained silent for most of the game, protesting the team’s lack of acknowledgment. They began cheering late in the match, breaking their silence in the 85th minute.

This was the first meeting between the teams since Portland coach Phil Neville was fired by Inter Miami in 2023, shortly before Messi joined the club. Neville, a close friend of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, had anticipated his eventual departure when Messi signed with the team.

The game also marked Inter Miami’s return to action after forward Tadeo Allende underwent successful knee surgery earlier this month. No timeline has been set for his return.
