Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that the Metro Rail Phase-II stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani is likely to start operations soon. He made this announcement while presenting the interim budget on Tuesday.
The minister said that the State government is also continuing to request the Central government to approve metro rail projects in Coimbatore and Madurai, which are important growing cities in Tamil Nadu.
He explained that regulatory approvals from the Railway Board are needed before the first stage of Phase-II can be opened to the public. This first stage covers a 14.6 km stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur. Once the required clearances are received, the services are expected to begin.
The Phase-II project is aimed at improving public transport in Chennai by reducing traffic congestion and offering faster, safer travel options. When completed, the new metro stretch will connect important residential and commercial areas, making daily travel easier for thousands of commuters.
The government said it is working to complete the remaining work quickly so that people can benefit from improved metro connectivity across the city.
