Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that Mexico will continue to send humanitarian aid to Cuba, even though the United States has imposed sanctions on countries that trade with or supply oil to the island nation.
Speaking at a press conference, President Sheinbaum made it clear that helping the Cuban people is a priority for her government. She said Mexico believes in supporting countries in need and will not stop its assistance because of outside pressure.
Recently, Mexico sent two navy ships to Cuba carrying around 814 tonnes of food and other essential supplies. These shipments are meant to help families facing shortages of basic goods due to the ongoing economic crisis and fuel problems on the island.
President Sheinbaum said more aid will be sent in the coming weeks. She stressed that the difficult situation in Cuba cannot be ignored, especially as many ordinary people are struggling to get food, medicine and other necessities.
She also criticised the sanctions imposed by the United States, saying they hurt common citizens rather than the government. According to her, the restrictions have made life harder for Cuban families and worsened the country’s economic problems.
The Mexican leader urged the United States and the international community to reconsider their approach. She called the sanctions unfair and appealed for more compassion and cooperation to support the Cuban people.
Mexico’s decision reflects its long-standing policy of maintaining friendly relations with Cuba and offering humanitarian help during times of crisis.
