In Madurai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the election campaign of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu. During the rally, he strongly criticised the ruling party in the State and accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of large-scale corruption.
Addressing party workers and supporters at the public meeting, Mr. Modi alleged that several major scams had taken place in Tamil Nadu under the current government. He claimed there was a ₹11,365 crore cash-for-transfer scam and a ₹1,900 crore cash-for-job scam. He also mentioned an ₹11,000 crore cash-for-contract scam, a ₹4,700 crore mining scam, and a ₹1,40,000 crore scam linked to TASMAC operations.
The Prime Minister said that corruption had affected the State’s development and harmed ordinary people. He stated that the NDA is committed to transparent governance and development-focused policies. According to him, the alliance would work towards improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and strengthening industries in Tamil Nadu.
He said that Tamil Nadu has great potential for growth in sectors such as manufacturing, defence production, and technology.
The rally saw a large turnout of NDA supporters from different parts of the region. Security arrangements were tightened in and around the venue, and party leaders from alliance partners shared the stage.
With this rally, the NDA formally began its campaign in Tamil Nadu, aiming to strengthen its presence in the State ahead of the upcoming elections.
